Wind, solar radiation, and landfill gas are promising source of renewable energy because they exist over wide geographical areas and the technologies to harvest them could be quickly implemented. These technologies are getting cheaper, through technological improvement and through the benefits of mass production and market competition. An ongoing challenge is to find effective and suitable areas to implement the technologies without causing ecological harm. In this regard, one type of land use could be closed or soon to be closed landfills.

The aim of this report is to present the studies conducted for assessing the technological, financial, and environmental implications of implementing the wind energy, solar energy, and landfill gas to energy technologies at landfill sites in Florida. The studies are providing a framework that landfill owners and developers from Florida can use to determine project feasibility in a number of well-defined phases with a series of distinct tasks allowing for relatively quick and easy assessments at a high level as well as in-depth analyses. Important technical parameters for electricity production via wind turbine, photovoltaic and landfill gas to energy technologies, a method for assessing the renewable resource potential of each technology in multiple phases on a site-specific basis, a method for determining financial viability, a method for assessing environmental impacts without the need for expensive software and a discussion of the benefits of synergistically implementing multiple technologies are provided.

The inclusion of renewable energies at closed or soon to be closed landfills in Florida could be a development path that offers the best development perspectives with relation to the creation of employment opportunities and a potential export market for developed technologies and expertise in these fields.
